UofM Rotaract celebrated the chapter’s 5th birthday on November 8th, 2009.

We were very fortunate to have Rotaraians from the Ann Arbor Rotary Club and Interactors from Pioneer and Huron High School to join us for our charter dinner.

Our guest speaker was Carrie Yarina(Rotaract member). She shared her adventures and stories from her Rotary Youth Exchange experience in Turkey.

We concluded the night with recognitions for the new members and outstanding officers.

Eliminating Poverty: The Role of Governments, NGOs, and YOU

October 15, 2008, 7pm-9pm in the Ballroom of the Union.

What specific steps must be taken by governments, NGOs, businesses and volunteers to help alleviate severe poverty in the world? Come to our interactive panel discussion with several experts from a variety of backgrounds to obtain a complete and holistic perspective on international poverty and learn how you can get involved in the solution.

Our panel of experts:

Mary E. Corcoran, Ph.D, Professor, School of Social Work, Ford School of Public Policy:
Dr. Corcoran specializes in race and ethnicity-based differences in women’s wages and employment, the effects of welfare reform on working mothers, and the intergenerational transmission of economic inequality.

Mary Hall-Thiam, Ed.D, Rights Specialist, Michigan Department of Human Services:
Currently on special assignment for the remainder of 2008, Dr. Thiam is working for the DHS Director as Coordinator for the first Statewide Poverty Summit.

Susan B. Neuman, Ed.D, Professor, School of Education:
Returning from a two-year term as the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education, Professor Neuman is a specialist in early literacy development for children who live in poverty.

Jerry S. Walden, M.D:
Dr. Walden is the founder and Medical Director Emeritus of Packard Community Clinic, a non-profit agency with a mission of providing high quality healthcare to all, regardless of financial circumstance.

Frederick Wherry, Ph.D, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology:
Dr. Wherry is an economic sociologist who uses qualitative methods and comparative approaches to study culture, consumption, global markets, and local production processes.

Professors Eisenberg and Wilson lecture on clean water

September 24, 2008. Professors Eisenberg and Wilson visited our club and talked about their efforts with clean water in Ecuador. In their stimulating and thought-provoking presentation, they emphasized the importance of sustainability and education in clean-water projects. Thank you professors for a wonderful presentation.
